Welcome to the City of Victoria in beautiful British Columbia! Canada's warmest city, the historic "The City of Gardens", awaits you with a brilliant selection of homes for sale and properties suited to every need. Victoria is a vibrant, bustling city that carefully holds on to its personal charm and heritage. Beloved by both visitors and residents, Victoria's is one property market that won't disappoint.
Homes for sale in Victoria are in high demand. The city and surrounds are known Canada-wide for their beauty, mild weather, and well-preserved heritage architecture.
No better symbol of this heritage exists than the harbour, waterfront area. Between the grand Empress Hotel, imperial Parliament Buildings, and Edwardian Belmont Building, the strong imprint of late 19th and early 20th-century English style is evident.
This style extends into Victoria's surrounding areas, like Fernwood, Rockland, Fairfield West, James Bay, Hillside, and Oaklands. Here the keen-eyed buyer can spot lovingly kept examples of Tudor, Edwardian, Arts-and-Crafts, and Prairie-style architecture.
Victoria is particularly well known for its early-20th century Arts-and-Crafts movement. This architectural trend sought to avoid mechanically reproduced ostentation in favour of locally responsive, personalized, and understated quality.
Within the city of Victoria itself, dedicated examples of mid-to-late century modernism are a rarity. However, previously industrial, brick buildings in the downtown area have been renovated into up-market condo buildings, with extensions featuring strong horizontal lines and large windows.
This modern condo style extends into other areas, reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright's work in their use of multi-leveled roof lines, and strong post-and-lintel shapes. Extending along Victoria's major transport routes, to the north and east, smaller examples abound. These constructions either emulate the prominent glass and floor designs, or opt for more clean and quiet stucco facades.
Newer townhome and detached constructions go one of two ways: West Coast Modern, or new-traditional character home. The former makes use of flat roof lines in multi-leveled configurations, with a mix of raw exterior finishes and large windows to blend with the environment. The latter employs cascading forward facing gables, clapboard siding and prominent trim to create an authentic old-world feel.
Moving further afield, Victoria's suburbs are populated by many mid-century bi-level stucco and clapboard one-stories. Many of these buildings display minimal-traditional details, sitting behind long, well-kept front lawns.
Overall, Victoria has an eclectic and varied mix of building types and styles, from up-market urban condos, to well-established neighborhoods for families and retirees, to hip enclaves for artists and entrepreneurs. And, dotted throughout are heritage gems displaying some of the best examples of Victorian, Queen Anne, and Craftsman style homes in North America. There are also houseboats.
Located at the southern tip of Vancouver Island, the city of Victoria is closer to the U.S. than it is to the Canadian mainland. Both Port Angeles and Seattle can be accessed from downtown Victoria via ferry across the Juan de Fuca Straight.
After a 30 minute drive north, residents can hop on a ferry to Vancouver or one of the many nearby islands. And the great Trans-Canada Highway begins its journey in Victoria.
Victoria also enjoys some of the best weather in all of Canada, acting as a commercial, government, and tourism hub for the area. Victoria is a big draw for tourists visiting the west coast due to its historic architecture, beautiful scenery, and cultural heritage.
Residents in Victoria enjoy access to attractive coastal waters with endless sight-seeing possibilities, excellent local amenities and services, unbelievable outdoor recreation, and a treasure trove of retail and culinary options.
